API key

This site runs entirely in your browser. It has no server of its own — your browser calls the Companies House Public Data API directly, using a shared key that ships with the site.

That shared key has one rate limit for everyone: 600 requests every 5 minutes. If searches start failing, use your own key instead. It is free, takes about two minutes, and is stored in this browser only.

  1. Register for a free account at the Companies House developer hub.
  2. Create an application. Choose Live to read the real register, or Test for the sandbox.
  3. Open the application and copy the value labelled REST API key. The OAuth2 client ID and client secret are for a different flow and will not work here.
  4. Paste it below.
